The pie charts below show the percentage of five kinds of books sold by a bookseller between 1972 and 2012.
The three pie charts compare the sales of five different kinds of books in the year of 1972, 1992 and 2012.
Overall, adult fiction has become the most popular category as the percentage of its sales rose significantly within 1972 and 2012. Meanwhile, biography gradually lost its popularity with a downward trend in its sales.
To be precise, adult fiction, children’s fiction and biography all represented 20% of the books sold at the beginning of 1972. However, the percentage of adult fiction increased by 5% in the next two decades, reaching 45% at the end of 2012. Meanwhile, the figure for children’s fiction grew to 25%, which was the second-highest proportion in 2012. By comparison, the sales of travel book and biography both witness a significant drop. After a slight increase by 3% between 1972 and 1992, the percentage of travel book went down to 10% in 2012. Similarly, there was a gradual decline to 8% in the percentage of biography. Last but not least, other types of book made up a quarter of books sold in 1972 and this figure plummeted to 12% in 2012.
