Process diagram showing the production of five types of tea.
The process diagram illustrates how five different types of the beverage, tea is produced from its matured leaves. The five different types of tea, white tea, green tea, oolong tea, large leaf black tea and small leaf black tea undergo various production stages ranging from three to five steps before the finished product is achieved.
The first and second steps are the same for the production of all types of tea. The matured leaves are plucked after which they are allowed to wither through a process called wilting. After this stage, the distinctive processes for the various sub types of tea are initiated.
For green tea, the withered leaves are steamed and rolled. Wilted leaves are rolled for oolong and large leaf black tea after which slight fermentation is carried out on the former and full fermentation on the latter. In the case of small leaf black tea, the wilted leaves are crushed before they undergo the next step which is full fermentation. At the stage, the final production step begins.
Dry heat in the oven is used to achieve the final processing in tea production. Wilthered leaves are dried to form white tea. After oven drying, the steamed tea leaves becomes green tea while the slightly fermented rolled leaves produce oolong tea. The large leaf black tea is produced from fully fermented rolled leaves after exposure to oven heat while the small leaf black tea is made from oven dried fully fermented crushed leaves. The distinct types of tea are then packaged separately and are ready for marketing and consumption.
