The given table compares the underground rail networks in six different metropolises in the world in terms of their age, length and number of annual passengers.
Overall, while the rail line in London is the oldest and longest among all, that in Tokyo serves the highest number of travelers on a yearly basis.
As can be seen from the table, London’s rail line was the oldest of the systems in six surveyed cities, dating back to 1863. This system covers 394 kilometers of route, nearly twice as long as the 199-kilometer-long railway opened in 1900 in Paris. By contrast, the youngest network, which opened in 2001, is in Los Angeles and the shortest is Kyoto's, with only 11 km.
In addition, the underground railway in Tokyo is the busiest system by serving 1927 million people per year, followed by that in Paris with 1191 million. On the contrary, that in Kyoto has the lowest yearly passenger count, with only 45 million. Moreover, Los Angeles’s railroad carries only 50 million commuters per year, while the figure for Washington DC is roughly triple that, with 150 million.
