In the first 3 years from 1998 to 2000, there was a significant growth in the number of airport visitors. Heathrow airport attracted 27.2 million travelers in 1998 and this figure rose sharply, reaching a peak at 48.2 units at the end of the period. The figure for Gatwick airport was 36.5 and 44.4 million traveler, respectively.
