Overall, it is clear that there were significant upward trends in the number of visitors at three airports over a 5-year period. Another noticeable point is that Gatwick was the most popular airport over most years in question.
Looking at the details, regarding Gatwick and Stansted, the figure started at 36.5 million travelers and 17.3 million travelers in 1998, respectively. At this point, the figure in 2002 for both airports went up gradually, at 51.1 million for Gatwick, compared to 43.3 million for Stansted. Following this, there was a sharp increase in the figure for Gatwick, hitting a peak of 69.3 million in 2003. Meanwhile, the number of visitors in Stansted experienced a levelling off over the second half of the whole period.
In terms of Heathrow, despite growing considerably form 27.2 million in 1998 to 48.2 million in 2002, the number of visitors the fall quickly to 33.2 million in the next two years. However, it then recovered to 45.6 million in the final year.
