The table illustrates the area of land under forests in million hectares in six different regions of the world during 1990, 2000 and 2005. Overall, the forest area is found to be highest in 1990.
In the year 1990, Europe had the highest area under forests followed by South America, with 989 and 946 million hectares respectively, whereas 749 million hectares of forest area is in Africa. North America and Asia had 708 and 576 million hectares of land under forests. On contrast, Oceania had the lowest area under forest, with only 199 million hectares of land.
It is evident from the table that, the area under forest had decreased from 1990 to 2005 except in Europe and Asia, where the forest area gradually increased. It raised from 989 in 2001 to 1001 in 2005 in Europe and from 576 in 1990 to 584 in 2005. In North America and Oceania, the forest area is found to be more or less constant from 1990 to 2005, in the range of 197-199 million hectares.
It can be concluded that Europe had a vast area under forests, while Oceania had less forest area.
