The table presents the data on the quantity of land (in millions of hectares) covered with woods in six world areas. The information available shows the changes in the number of within the periods between 1990, 2000 and 2005. Overall, it can be clearly seen that the situation differs in different parts of the globe.

Of the three biggest areas represented, two- Africa (749 mln ha) and South America (946 mln ha) - demonstrate a considerable decrease in the forested area, namely by 58 and 64 mln hectares. Europe, being the most vastly covered with woods area (989 mln ha), demonstrates slight growth by 9 mln in 2000, and then by 3 within the next five-year period. Oceania and North America experienced a slight decline in the forested area by 2 and 3 mln ha, respectively.

The only area to experience at first decline from 576 to 570 mln ha, and then recovery by 14 mln ha, is Asia.

Overall, globally the forested area is gradually shrinking, which is an alarming trend
