Based on the table, the number of silk factories in this region increased during this period, while the population of their employees decreased at the same time.
In 1851, 272 silk companies existed in these countries, whereas the statistics represent a sharp rise starting from this year until 1861. Although fluctuations can be observed through the next years, there was not a noticeable change till 1901, the data always stayed higher than 623 factories, which belongs to the end of the interval.
Despite this increase in the number of factories, the amount of their recruitment fell from 130,750 to 38,942 person by 1901, which means that the rate of employment by each factory declined dramatically from almost 500 employees per factory to about 70. Moreover, even though men were always accounted for the majority of the workforce, their percentage reduced from roughly 60 percent to nearly 67 percent over the course of this study.
