Essay topics:

The table shows the number of employees and factories producing silk in England and Wales between 1851 and 1901.

The given table demonstrates the workforce in two countries, namely England and Wales in a span of 50 years starting from 1851.

It is noticeable that the number of men and women involved in silk industry witnessed a considerable drop in the surveyed period. Having been at a peak of 53,964 and 76,786 in 1851, the statistics for male and female workers suffered a significant decline in the subsequent years, sinking to a new low of 13,375 and 25,567 in 1901, respectively. Consequently, the total number of workers decreased by approximately four times in 100 years.

In contrast, the number of silk-producing factories experienced a period of erratic movement. In 1851, the number of factories was at the lowest point of 272, then increased dramatically to 761 in 1861. However, the following years saw a slight decline, apart from a partial recovery in 1881.

Another significant feature to note is that there were far more female workers participating in silk production than male ones in the whole conducted years. To illustrate, the number of women nearly doubled that of men in 1901.
