The table shows the number of employees and factories producing silk in England and Wales between 1851 and 1901.
The chart illustrates how many male, female workers and factories produced silk in England and Wales from 1851 to 1901.
Overall, there was a decrease in the total number of employees due to the declines of workers in both genders throughout the period. In contrast, while the number of employees producing silk got lesser, the quantity of factories increased sharply.
The number of male workers started at 53964 people, after which it saw a gradual decline to 13375 employees in 1901. Similar changes, but with much greater number, the figures for females working in the silk factories drop continuously from 76786 to over 25000 in the 50-year period.
130750 people had the job of making silk in the first year, followed by a significant decrease to near 39000 in the year 1901, due to the drop of workers in both genders. However, the quantity of factories built for producing silk experienced a fluctuation, which increased considerably to over 700 before declining to 623 in the last year.
