The table gives information of date opened, length and number of transported passengers in one year (2015) in six global cities.
Overall, it is noticeable that the older the metro system is, the more km it has, with an exception to Kyoto. In terms of transported passengers in 2015, metro in Tokyo transported the most, while metro systems in Kyoto and Los Angeles transported more or less the same number.
The oldest and the longest metro system can be found in Europe where its establishment is dated back to 19th century (London in 1863, Paris in 1900). Similarly both of the underground systems have the longest route, while London has almost two times longer track compare to Paris (199 oppose to 394 kilometres). In contrast, Kyoto’s metro system is the second youngest and the shortest in length of track (only 11km).
Interestingly, metro systems established in 20th century do not follow the same pattern as London and Paris. The youngest a metro system is, the shortest is its route as well as number of transported passengers in 2005 when both shortest metro systems in Kyoto and Los Angeles (11km and 28km respectively), transported more or less passengers (around 0.13 billions). However, metro in Tokyo had transported the same amount of passengers in 2005 as all other metro systems together (3.2 billion).
