The pie chart below shows the main reasons why agricultural land becomes less productive. The table shows how these causes affected three regions of the world during the 1990s.

The pie chart illustrates causes of worldwide land degradation in four categories (over-grazing, over-cultivation, deforestation and other), while the table outline data of land degradation in North America, Europe and Oceania.

Overall, it is clear that causes of land degradation are caused more or less the same. Furthermore European land is the most degraded by all causes with the exception for over-grazing, moreover, Europe has the largest proportion of land damaged.

In terms of worldwide causes of land degradation, the highest proportion (35%) is caused by over-grazing, deforestation and over-cultivation followed with almost the same percentage (30 and 28 per cent respectively). Other causes are represented by only 7%.

As for specific regions, Europe has the largest proportion of land degraded than any other country, with 23%, its almost two times more than Oceania (13%) and nearly five times more than in North America (5%). Deforestation and over-cultivation shows the highest numbers also in Europe (9.8% and 7.7% accordingly). From the other hadn’t the lowest proportion of land degraded by deforestation is in America (0.2%), while, interestingly, over-cultivation does not cause any harm in Oceania. From the other hand, in Oceania, 11.3% of land is degraded by over-grazing, while in North America and Europe this phenomenon is seen significantly less (1.5% and 5.55 respectively).
