It has been claimed that workers over 50 ages are not responsive to rapidly changing ideas in the modern workplace and for this reason younger workers are preferred. To What extent do you agree or disagree.

Many organizations and recruiting firms believe that it is ideal to employ a young person to a job over a 50 year old candidate. The belief comes with the obvious fact that with changing times and the wide use of technology in accomplishing things, newer gadgets, applications and modern ways of working, the younger generation is more apt at finding the solutions as against the older people. While this is true to a certain level I would still disagree to this preferential set of selection of candidates based on their age factor as against their capabilities.

As goes the old saying “Age is just a number”, but in fact if we really look into it, with age comes great maturity and exposure of handling things and their experience is a big asset to the company. The few benefits, that we all would agree while we speak about the older generation is their capabilities of handling work, their expertise, patience, honesty , integrity and organizational skills and punctuality. These aspects are developed over a period of time. They are the best mentors and guides because of their years of experience, which includes the good and the bad ones. Their achievements and failures all that could act as a best guide and caution while taking big decisions and handling projects on a fast track basis.

Contrary to this the younger candidate may be fast and adapt to newer ways of working, may be able to find solutions to a problem easily taking full advantage of the technology, but they are impatient, need faster results, frequently make mistakes, and thereby delay the end result leading to less efficiency and an impact to the organization. The other point worth noticing is, that the younger generation is always way to ambitious and judgmental, they prefer being non committal , need flexibility of time and may even jump to newer opportunities, may lack responsibility towards the company for pay hikes.

The few negative aspects of the older generations that cannot be ignored are they are pretty rigid in their work patterns, lack flexibility, stubborn to adapting to newer technologies or newer ways or workings. They become over-confident about their working styles and refrain themselves with the changing scenarios. They also hate listening to innovative mindsets, and adjusting to newer surroundings and systems. Also one cannot ignore the fact the age factor makes them difficult to adjust with changing environments and adds fears in their minds making it more difficult for them to learn new things. The conflict of experience verses a fresh start to learn new things again makes it difficult for them to express their ideas confidently, always keeping them in a dilemma that they would be left behind.

Opposed to this the younger generation is fearless to change; they have nothing to lose, but to gain, in terms of great experience, even if they have to face an initial failure. They know they still great opportunities to explore and enough stamina and knowledge to switch over from one job to other. They are ready to take risks and open to challenges.
If we consider all these aspects, we would realize that any company needs both types of people, for a smooth running and successful business.

In my opinion when the older generation works hand in hand with the younger age group the output generated would be far more result oriented, cost effective and successful. The vast experience and perseverance as observed in the older age group coupled with the risk taking, innovative, adaptable, technology pro- youngsters can help the company grow faster and in the right direction, giving a fresh perspective to the organization thereby making every venture a sure success.
