Dear Emily,
I'm really delighted to have received your letter. Glad to hear you have finally found a well-paid job without having graduated from the uni. In your letter you mentioned some issues that bother you much and I'm going to give you some advice on how to address the problem.
Luckily, I remember myself being in your shoes on my first days at work when I was thrown in at the deep end. Then I had to meet a foreign delegation and entertain them on the first day of their visit. The thing is I could hardly remember any international business etiquette rules and put my foot in it over and over! So the confusion you wrote me about is quite familiar to me.
Actually, when I saw our Japanese colleagues for the first time I gave them my hand to shake although I had been taught in my International Business Etiquette classes that a bow should have been given instead. My next faux pas was putting their business cards in my pocket without reading them carefully, which made them annoyed. Fortunately, my manager was tolerant enough and supportive and she didn't tell me off later but tried to settle the growing tension between me and our guests.
Since your predicaments are similar to those I had at the beginning of my career, I'd suggest keeping calm and staying focused. Were I you, I'd revise all the notes taken in my lectures to refresh my memory. Besides, there is plenty of information in the Internet that could be used to improve your communication skills.
I hope my suggestions help you. If you need any more advice, don't hesitate to text or call me.
Best wishes,
Nataliia
