Essay topics:

Many people are working longer hours. Why is this happening? What problems can this cause to people?

Nowadays, it is increasingly common for people to work for longer than expected. This trend is caused by several reasons. Consequently, there are numerous negative effects that will arise.

One prominent reason is that a lot of people are in major debt. They can be newlyweds who take out a loan to purchase houses or someone whose family member involves in gambles and have lost all the money. Therefore, they need to work hard to increase their income. For example, in some Vietnamese firms, the amount of money paid for workers on weekends can double that on weekdays. Another factor is that there is a “long-hour culture” at work in some countries. In this culture, no employees want to be the first to leave and the last to arrive. This is because managers can judge their workers on how long they stay and how hard-working they are at workplaces. For instance, nearly a quarter of Japanese companies have their employees work more than 80 hours of overtime per month because of this culture.

This trend has led to lots of detrimental effects on people’s well-being. Firstly, more and more people are under massive pressure because of overwork. If employees cannot handle the stress resulting from longer-hour working, in the worst cases, suicides can happen. It can be clearly seen in Japan and Korea where there is a large number of people committing suicide due to stress caused by overwork. Secondly, it reduces the productivity of workers. If people overwork for a long period of time, they are susceptible to fatigue. Working in tiredness can result in not solving problems smartly or not being able to come up with innovative ideas.

In conclusion, significant pressure and inefficiency are the two major effects, which result from working for longer to earn more money and credit.
