Some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programmes (for example working for a charity, improving the neighbourhood or teaching sports to younger children).
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Some argue that high schools should include unpaid community service as a mandatory part of their programs, like assisting charities, improving neighborhoods, or teaching sports to younger children. I strongly agree with this idea as it fosters social responsibility and can boost academic performance, as explained in the following paragraphs.
Firstly, when students engage in community work, they develop a sense of social responsibility. This is beneficial because it makes them more socially aware individuals. They also become more involved in outdoor social activities, which helps them overcome introverted tendencies and exposes them to the world of community service. Moreover, this involvement contributes to their mental and physical well-being as they interact with different people, learn from others' experiences, and engage in physical activities within the community. For instance, it is found by various research that about 80 % or higher students participating in social service tend to focus more on serving others rather than solely on their careers, ultimately contributing to a stronger and more compassionate community.
Secondly, students who participate in community service are likely to achieve better academically. Surprisingly, research has shown that these students often develop a stronger motivation to make a positive impact on society. They set goals and are more determined to achieve them compared to those who solely focus on indoor academic activities. Additionally, community service allows them to learn beyond the standard curriculum, providing them with a broader education that encompasses practical life skills. Thus, these activities are crucial for enhancing academic performance and maintaining motivation.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that incorporating unpaid community service into high school programs equips students with social responsibility and motivates them to set and achieve goals while also benefiting the community at large.
