Some people do not go directly to college but travel or work for a short time. Do you think it has more advantages or disadvantages?
It is true that there has been a rising popularity in the trend towards postponing higher education for working or traveling. While not disavowing the benefits it brings about, I believe that this tendency also create several drawbacks.
On the one hand, taking a gap year has been proved to be of great significance for both individuals and the society thanks to a number of advantages. Indeed, traveling or working facilitates young adults broaden their horizons, as well as see the big picture of their lives. In addition, this also provides them with opportunities to sharpen up their soft skills, or even discover their new capabilities. Hence, it is safe to say that this tendency acts as a catalyst to youngsters to have a good grasp of their competence as well as the labor market and therefore, make the most of their college life to prepare for their careers. Another benefit can be reaped by the society. Specifically, no sooner do youngsters get involved in voluntary programs, or work as correspondents for non-government organization, than they shoulder the responsibility of assisting social equality and domestic prosperity.
On the other hand, it seems to me that spending a short time traveling and working before pursuing higher education exerts several negative impacts on residents. From an economic perspective, if youngsters apply for a job before getting a tertiary degree, it may be an unwise decision because of an inadequate financial outcome. Indeed, the knowledge they acquired in high school is jus fundamental concepts rather than academic lessons, which makes them qualified for only clerical works and cannot assure a decent income. From an education perspective, it is obvious that taking a gap year will interrupt young adults’ transmission of knowledge. This has been scientifically proved to be detrimental to their knowledge assimilation and, consequently, makes them likely to fall behind with their studies.
In brief, I opine that although the advantages of working and traveling instead of pursuing tertiary degrees right after high school graduation are undeniable, its negative influences should not be overlooked.
