Recently published figures show wildlife population around the world has decreased by around 50% over the last 50 years. What can we do to help protect the wildlife round the world?
Together we can make a difference to Wildlife protection
The subject of discussion is one of the most important challenges that our world faces today. We the people, have a moral responsibility and obligation to protect, nurture and ensure the necessary conditions are in place to ensure the continuation of our wildlife species.
Now, let us first discuss the main issues that have resulted in a 50% depletion of wildlife population. To me, the answer to this question is very simple. Expansion of cities into protective habitats, rampant felling of trees, global warming, corruption in wildlife ministries around the world, lack of support and development of villages and poaching of wild animals for their flesh, fur, tusks are some of the major reasons.
The challenges ahead of us are daunting, I know and understand we cannot change behaviour overnight, but I am sure if we focus on the top issues and put measures in place it will go a long way to arresting this trend. We can do this!
The solutions to my mind are as follows. Global wildlife agreements to be honoured in letter and spirit. Strict action and persecution to poachers, we need to break and disrupt their clandestine operations. Wildlife officers should have state of the art equipment to track, manage the wildlife population. Planning of cites to be done in a scientific way to ensure harmony with nature and that we do not encroach on reserved wildlife areas. Supply of water by way of forest conservation to ensure there is adequate supply of water in the forests. This will prevent wild animals wandering out of their natural habitat for food and water. We need to let wild animals live in peace and propagate, which is their right. Villages bordering the forests should be given special attention and support to sustain themselves so that they do not wander into the forests looking for food.
In conclusion, even though the challenges ahead are daunting, we together with determination can do this. We must, we have to for the sake of our incredible wildlife and for the benefit of mankind.
