The author of the reading suggests solutions by which a tree named Torreya can be saved by getting extinct. However, the lecturer asserts that none of the solutions mentioned by the author will be able to provide a fruitful result.
First, the author in the reading states that the solution is to reestablish Torreya in the same microclimate - wetter and cooler than surrounding dry and warm climate - in which it once used to flourish. The lecturer disagrees. She says that the environmental condition in microclimate have changed significantly over the years than the past when these trees used to thrive in it. It has become less cold and wet. She adds that it can be due to changes in surrounding larger region temperature or may be global warming or the drying of wetlands in whole Florida region.
Second, the author claims that if we can shift the Torreya to the north form the microclimate location where it will be cooler. It is expected that it can thrive here. Again, the lecturer refutes the suggestion. She goes on to say that once similar thing has been done. The Black Locust trees were one on the verge of extinction and were shifted to other location, so that they can thrive. It spread so fast that they killed other species of trees too which were in itself on the edge of survival. Therefore, this type of technique should be rejected because it can have unpredicted outcomes.
Finally, the author contends that they should be preserved in research centers where they can be protected. However, the lecturer states that there is flaw in this recommendation. She says that in order to survive a disease by a particular species of tree they need diversity. Such type of environment can't be provided in the research center. It is only possible for them to be diversified in a large area of land like forests.
