In the 1950s Torreya Taxifolia a type of evergreen tree once very common in the state of Florida started to die out No one is sure exactly what caused the decline but chances are good that if nothing is done Torreya will soon become extinct Experts a

The passage and the lecturer are discussing about ways to preserve Torreya taxifolia trees of Florida state. While the passage mentions some ways to do reduce the decline of Torreya. The lecturer refutes all the ways mentioned in the passage by using his own reasons and evidences.

To start with, the reading passage suggests reestablishing Torreya in the same micro climate location of Florida where it thrived for many years. The lecturer on the other hand, argues that this method is unlikely to be successful. He says that these micro climate areas are affected by climate of surrounding regions of Florida, and also due to global warming the temperature has raised in this micro climate areas which resulted in drying up of wetter land, which is a necessity for growth of Torreya.

Secondly, the passage points out the option to move torreya to a different location where the temperature is cooler and suitable for its survival. However the lecturer argues that this kind of migration will lead to other consequences. He gives an example of black locust tree migration to support his point. The black locust tree has quickly spread and killed other plantations of the migrated region upon it's migration.

Finally, the last point option mentioned in the passage is to preserve the Torreya in research centers in a closely monitored environment. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this method pointing out that This preserved population trees will not be resistant to diseases and also the research centers will not have enough capacity to grow the trees in large population and in a diverse way for the Torreya to be resistant to diseases.

In conclusion, The reading passage mentions the ways of preserving the Torreya trees. The lecturer refutes these methods by stating that they will be unsuccessful.
