4 day workweek jobs

Essay topics

The reading here suggests that mandating policy for offering the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent) of the normal pay for willing employees of a company would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option. However, the lecture argues that neither the company nor the economy is going to benefit from this policy.
Firstly, the reading provides the argument that the shortened workweek would increase company profits as the 4day-week employees will be well rested, so they are likely to make less error and with the remaining salary new employee can be hired by the company. On the other hand, the lecture suggests that hiring new employee would result into more expenditure for the company. As the company will have to spend money on training and health benefits to every employee it hires, so it really doesn't matter in case of the health benefit or the training whether the employee works for 4 day or 5 day a week. This extra budget will eventually eliminate the profit.
Secondly, the author claims that for every 4 employee willing to take a 4 day per week option will make room for a new employment, that may reduce the unemployment scenario of the national job market. However, the professor doubts this claim. As the company might want their 4 day employees to work the same amount they might have worked in their 5 day job when the company realizes that new employment will cost them more money. This would likely to backfire the whole concept because now instead of being rested employees will become completely exhausted from the tremendous pressure.
Lastly, the author expects that 4 day workweek will improve the quality of lives for individual employees in return of lower salary and provide more time for their private interests and leisure activities. However the professor argues that 4 day workweek will reduce job stability and lower the chances of promotion. As the company may trust a 5 day employee more than a 4 day employee who is available throughout the whole week.
So as it stands now that professor has dismissed every point of the benefits claimed the author on a 4 day workweek.
