The passage discusses about a recently found painting and its relation with a 19th century painter named as Whistler. The passage espouses that the painting is a work of Whistler and gives three reasons for the same. The lecturer refutes those claims and gives counter reasons to prove that the painting is not a work of Whistler.
Firstly, the passage states that Whistler's friend included the painting in an exhibition of painting in London. And as he was a close friend of Whistler, it is assumed that he believed the painting to be of Whistler. Opposing this argument, the lecturer stated that the exhibition was not of Whistler's painting. It was a common exhibition. The friend could have included that painting only because he owned it.
Furthermore, the passage states that the woman in the paining clearly resembles to the woman in "Symphony in White", which was an artwork of Whistler. Also the style resembled that of Whistler's by use of monochromatic palate with lots of black, grays and whites, used by Whistler in his famous painting. In counterpoint, the lecturer clarifies that the woman used to be a very famous model in those days and she featured in many other paintings at that time. Moreover usage of Black and white colour does not mean it was Whistler's work. Many artists at that time preferred monochromatic palates.
Lastly, the passage argues that the painting consisted of a butterfly in the lower right corner of the painting which Whistler usually draws as his signature. The lecturer rebut that claim and states that the butterfly is totally of different shape and colour. Moreover, Whistler used to paint his signature in the Upper left corner of the painting. Further analysis of the painting showed that the butterfly has been added later in the painting.
