all university students should be required to take a speech class before they graduate.
It is of great importance for students to have presentation skills. Therefore, in my opinion, a speech class should be compulsory for all students in university to enhancing their ability to speak in public. I feel this way for two reasons, which I will explore in the following essay.
To begin with, a speech course is an opportunity to overcome fears about public speaking. Feeling anxiety over speaking in front of crowds is a common phobia, and the fear can be released with professional help and repetitive practices. For instance, An old friend of mine developed his speaking skills through a speech class. He used to be nervous throughout presentations that he frequently made mistakes, which always made her frustrated. One day, he decided to take a speech class to conquer her feeling of restless. In the course, the professor taught her to relax, speak apparently, and hold people's attention, and he practiced a lot in front of his classmate. Due to the speech class, he is no longer afraid of speaking in public.
Furthermore, students need a proficient speaking capability before starting their careers. Nowadays, speech skills are essential to get a job because most companies demand that applicants give presentations as part of job interviews. My own experience is a compelling illustration of this. Several years ago, I was a senior in university and had been preparing to find a job. I had been worried that I would never get hired because of my poor speech ability, but I challenged myself to take a speech class. I practiced speaking in public repetitively and gave them numerous presentations. As a result, my speaking ability was eventually improved, and able to get a position in the central bank, which is called the Bank of Korea. Had I not taken the speech course, my dream, being a central banker, would never have come true.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that every university student should take a speaking course before graduation. This is because the course is an invaluable chance to reduce fears in terms of speech and because good speaking skills are necessary for students.
