Altruism
The article talks about Altruism, which is a behavior of self-sacrifice for other's benefit. The passage has explained this behavior with the help of three examples. However, the professor refutes this idea and claims that in altruism both the individuals get benefited. She refutes each of author's reasoning.
First, the passage explains that when a human donates his body organ, or food to any of his relative, or any stranger, he doesn't get benefited in the act, at all. However, the lecturer discards this statement by saying when any human does this act, he gets appreciation from society or his relatives. As a result, his self-worth enhances. She argues that this kind of non-material award is also valuable.
Second, the author of passage posits the act of altruism, by giving an example of the meerkat, which is a mammal dwells in burrows in Africa. The sentinel meerkat stands as a guard of the colony without having food and looks for predators, whereas other meerkats hunt for food and enjoy the food. The professor dismisses this idea by saying that sentinel meerkat is the first who eats before starting the duty of guard.
Third, the article gives the statement that when any predator attacks on the colony, the sentinel meerkat gives the signal to group members to look for shelter, and all the team member gather together or scatters away, the guard meerkat runs away alone. Thus, he puts his life in danger to save others. The professor denies the statement. She says that when any predator attacks, the sentinel meerkat is the first one, who runs away first after giving a signal to other group members. By doing this the sentinel meerkat may put other animals in danger, as the predator may start looking for other group members of meerkat group by hearing this signal.
In Conclusion, the lecturer effectively casts doubt on all the claims presented in the reading.
