Altruism

Essay topics:

Altruism

The reading and the lecture both about Altruism. The author of the reading feels that Altruism means animal sacrifices its interests for other animals and it is found in many animals. The lecturer challenges the claims made by author. She is of the opinion that no one is altruist.

To begin with, the author gives example of human. He says that human shares food with strangers, donate body organs. Such act is a example of altruism. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She points out that when human donate kidney to other person, he gets appreciation form society as well as feeling of self worthiness. Human gets this kind of non material rewards. So this is not altruism.

Secondly, the author gives example of meerkat animal. He posits that meerkat sacrifice his own food for other members and stand guard looking for predator. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that the close examination reveals that the guard which stand looking for predators always is full of stomach. She elaborates this point by bringing up the point that guard is most likely to escape faster than other members of animals.
