Altruism
Recently, there has been a ton of debate around altruism, which is defined as an act of selflessness for the benefit of a group or of the others. According to the article, the author puts forth the idea that individuals performing altruistic acts gain nothing for themselves. In the listening passage, the lecturer is quick to point out some serious flaws in the writer's claims. In fact, the professor believes that altruistic behaviour provide a lot of reward to the subject, and addresses, in detail, the trouble with each point made in the reading text.
First and foremost, the writer mentions the instance of altruistic phenomenon in human society to strengthen his opinion. The reading affirms that the people who share food or donate organs literally sacrifice a part of themselves without expecting anything in return. The lecturer, however, stand in firm opposition to this claim. By scrutinizing the same case, the professor comes to a conclusion that the people in this scenario, actually gains a lot of appreciation and valuable things for their altruistic actions. In other words, they do earn reputation for their selflessness, instead of nothing as said in the text.
The view of both sides are even more deeply divided when it comes to the next example of altruism in animals, specifically meerkats. The passage supposes that the sentinel in a herd of meerkats has the least benefit since it suffers from hungry while the others are hunting and faces the most risk when a predator attacks. Result of some research provided by the professor show the contrary. It clarifies that not only are the standing guards the first ones to eat, but they are also more likely to escape in case of danger. For that their only job is to warn other meerkats, they have time to run when an enemy approach, while the rest of the herd are busy finding food and in the passive positions.
To sum up, both the writer and professor hold conflicting views about altruism. It's clear that they will have trouble finding some common ground on this issue.
