Altruism

Essay topics:

Altruism

The writer goes on with a view that altruism is exclusively an unselfish act where an animal sacrifices its own interest for the sake of benefits inspired by other animals except it. He states that the range of altruism varies from sharing food with strangers to the donation of body organs to the family members. However, the lecturer totally disagrees with the writer's view. He goes on illustrating such examples that totally degrade authors point of view.

First of all, the author begins his passage with the definition and some examples to support his further explanation. In his primary illustration of meerkat behaviour, the guard meerkat, which acts as a sentinel, usually guards and looks out for predator without feeding while others hunt for food or eat food. However, the listener points out that in a recent finding by researchers, the sentinel has been found to be fed prior to standing guard.

Secondly, the writer's view that the sentinel is in high risk of predator is further weakened by the lecturer. The listener puts forward a recent finding that sentinel is found to stand guard near a burrow. So, if a predator seems to attack the group, the safest one will be the sentinel. Moreover, the typical cry exhibited by sentinel to alarm the feeding group, as said by the writer may act as a signal for gathering which in turn increases the further vulnerability of feeding or hunting group.

Similarly, according to the lecturer, the donation of human's organ is also not a totally altruistic behaviour, although the author has said so. It is because lecturer justifies by saying that non-material reward may be valuable to some person or society.

Finally, there exists a completely contrary positions among the writer and the lecturer.
