In this set of materials, the reading passage proposes to establish colonies of human on asteroids and provides some reasons. However, the lecturer believes that it is not very practical and all reasons have serious downsides. So, he explains some evidence to refute them all.
First of all, the author of the article asserts that low gravity makes life easier in asteroids. In contrast, the professor argues that there are certain risks such as health problems. Even after short term living in low gravity area, bone density and muscle mass would decrease. For long time, the consequences are more dangerous. So, human will not survive if settle in asteroids.
Furthermore, it is mentioned in the passage that mining valuable metals is profitable and economically cover the cost of of travel. On the contrary, the professor contends that it is not the whole picture and the cost of transportation of metals is very expensive which will not be reasonable. On the other hand, after increasing the supply the market price would go down and the price will not stay high enough to be profitable. Hence, nobody will invest for this project.
Finally, the reading claims that it is easy to reach the destination since asteroids are near to earth. Conversely, the lecturer states that even though it is easy to go there, it is not easy to return from. Asteroids have unusual orbits that force them to go distance from earth which is a challenge after some time. It would make it difficult for human to travel back to home planet and costly as well. In fact, people disagree to have one way trip to space.
