The reading and the lecture are about the possibility of colonizing asteroids instead of planets or Moon. The passage provides three advantages of asteroids colonization. The lecturer challenges the claims put forth by the author. He is of the opinion that the reasons mentioned in the passage are not practical.
To begin with, the author argues that asteroids have lower gravity. The article mentions that lower gravity offers several advantages such as safe landing and takeoff of the surface of asteroids, and carrying more instruments, required to establish a colony, with spaceships. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that it is true that lower gravity grants spaceships some advantages, but it poses serious risks. In this regard, he says passengers and inhabitants in asteroids would suffer from several physical illnesses caused by losing muscles and deficiency in bone density in the long run, as it is already the case for scientists residing in the international space station.
Secondly, the author suggests that asteroids have ample resources of valuable minerals that are considered as rare materials on Earth. In the article it is said that materials such as gold and platinum can be dug out and transported to the earth, thereby increasing the profits of asteroids colonies. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that while some invaluable minerals are in abundance in asteroids, other factors should be considered regarding the benefits of mining them. He elaborates on this by bringing up the point that the cost of mining and transportation of minerals is prohibitively high decreasing the gain margin for investors. He also adds the fact that there are many resources available, will increase the supply of these materials leading to a decline in the price and consequent decrease in the profit.
Finally, the author posits that traveling back and forth to asteroids is more convenient since some of them periodically orbit in the proximity of Earth, thereby making the travel easier and more affordable than travel to Mars. In contrast, the lecturer’s position is that periodic and unusual orbits of asteroids make getting back to earth much more difficult. He notes that while an asteroid is orbiting near the earth it is easy to get into it, but the problem arises when it gets far off Earth and sometimes it would go beyond Mars which makes it difficult to fly back to Earth.
