Essay topics:

Asteroids are large space objects made of rock and ice. There are hundreds of thousands of asteroids in our solar system. Though we often hear ideas about establishing colonies of humans to live and work on our Moon or our neighboring planet, Mars, some think that sending people to an asteroid would actually be the best colonization option for a number of reasons.

Low Gravity
To begin with, asteroids are often much smaller than planets, so they have lower gravity. When landing a spaceship, the craft would not be pulled as strongly or as forcefully toward the asteroid's surface, making the landing safer than landing on the Moon or Mars; it would also allow a spacecraft to carry much more equipment needed to set up the colony. It would also be easier for the spacecraft to take off again, so the spaceship would need to carry considerably less fuel for the trip back to Earth.

Mining Valuable Metals
Next, some asteroids are rich in valuable elements and precious metals that are relatively rare on Earth, such as gold and platinum. An asteroid colony would be extremely profitable and a good source of these raw materials. The colonists or businesses sponsoring them could more than pay for the cost of their support by mining minerals and sending them back to Earth.

Easy to Reach
Finally, asteroids are a good option for colonization because some of them would be very easy to reach. There are a number of asteroids that periodically come within or near Earth's orbit Some of them actually get closer to Earth than our Moon. So these asteroids would be much easier and more affordable to get to and get back from than a planet like Mars, which would require a two-year trip in each direction.

Both lecturer and author talk about the feasibility of colonization on an asteroid near Earth. They pay to three main aspects of this prospective plan.

First, the author indicates that asteroids are much smaller than the planets, so they have much less gravity compared with the planets. Therefore, landing the spacecraft will be safer rather than landing on the Moon and Mars. On the other hand, the lecturer accounts for some serious risks that would occur for the spacemen because of the low gravity. She implies that low gravity causes losing muscle mass, and bone would be weak under this circumstance. The spacemen can be on this asteroid with low gravity just for few months. Otherwise, they would suffer from this illness.

Second, the author believes that some asteroids are rich in some valuable and precious metals like gold and platinum. So humans can access this source of metals and benefit. On the contrary, the lecturer explains two main reasons and shows this is not a good idea. First, she thinks that the cost of mining and transporting such metals from a particular asteroid to Earth is as much as excavating the ground of Earth and mining the valuable elements. Furthermore, if the demand for a certain metal would be increased in the market, its price would be decreased. Based on this fact, this idea is not efficient as the author thinks.

Third, because of the short distance between Earth and nearby asteroids, the author thinks that it is easy to reach the nearby asteroids and colonize there. Also, the author believes it can take much less money and time to go to a nearing asteroid and back forth. Despite this, the lecturer implies that the orbiting path of the asteroids not only is not a usual and regular path that is well-known, but also the asteroids might go far even more distant than Mars and Moon. So the cost of going to a certain asteroid would be increased.
