Asteroids are large space objects made of rock and ice. There are hundreds of thousands of asteroids in our solar system. Though we often hear ideas about establishing colonies of humans to live and work on our Moon or our neighboring planet, Mars, some think that sending people to an asteroid would actually be the best colonization option for a number of reasons.
Low Gravity
To begin with, asteroids are often much smaller than planets, so they have lower gravity. When landing a spaceship, the craft would not be pulled as strongly or as forcefully toward the asteroid’s surface, making the landing safer than landing on the Moon or Mars; it would also allow a spacecraft to carry much more equipment needed to set up the colony. It would also be easier for the spacecraft to take off again, so the spaceship would need to carry considerably less fuel for the trip back to Earth.
Mining Valuable Metals
Next, some asteroids are rich in valuable elements and precious metals that are relatively rare on Earth, such as gold and platinum. An asteroid colony would be extremely profitable and a good source of these raw materials. The colonists or businesses sponsoring them could more than pay for the cost of their support by mining minerals and sending them back to Earth.
Easy to Reach
Finally, asteroids are a good option for colonization because some of them would be very easy to reach. There are a number of asteroids that periodically come within or near Earth’s orbit. Some of them actually get closer to Earth than our Moon. So these asteroids would be much easier and more affordable to get to and get back from than a planet like Mars, which would require a two-year trip in each direction.
Both the reading passage and the lecturer discuss whether asteroids are the best place for colonization. The reading argues that they are indeed the best option for colonization. Nevertheless, the professor disagrees with the passage by proposing three counter arguments mentioned below.
First, the reading suggests that since asteroids have low gravity, it is relatively safe for the spacecrafts compared to landing on the Moon or Mars. Nonetheless, the lecturer dismisses this idea by stating that the gravity actually contains potential risk to human being. To be more specific, according to the experiences of several astronauts, it is evident that people who live in a low gravity environment generally suffer from loosing muscle mass as well as decrease of bone density. Consequently, if people stay in that environment for too long, their health condition might be severely compromised.
Secondly, the passage mentions that several asteroids contain a significant amount of invaluable minerals. However, although the lecturer agrees that the minerals might seem profitable, the reality turns out to be the opposite. To elaborate, the passage forgets to mention that the cost of long term transportation of these minerals might be extremely high. In addition, there is no guarantee that the price of these valuable resources will remain the same after they are exploited in mass scale, this is because the increasing supply for these minerals will result in a decrease of the price in the market.
Last but not least, the reading passage states that asteroids are extremely easy to reach. Yet, the professor disagrees by mentioning that from time to time, the orbiting path of these asteroids are unusual and unpredictable. That is, it is possible that a certain asteroid might move close to the Earth at one point, and gradually move away from us. If this is the case, the cost for the spaceships to travel back to Earth might skyrockets, and this is a relatively difficult challenge to deal with.
All in all, the professor disagrees with all of the theories mentioned in the reading passage. That is to say, the professor maintains that colonizing asteroids is an extraordinarily whimsical idea.
