The reading and the lecture are both about colonization on the asteroids. While the author of the reading believes that there are three main advantages of colonizing the asteroids, the lecturer disputes the claims made in the article. His position is that there are clear downsides which make the colonization unpractical.
First of all, according to the reading, the landing and taking off of spacecraft will be safer under the low gravity as asteroids are often much smaller than planets. The author suggests that we can carry more necessary equipment for colony and less fuel for returning since it costs less to travel between earth and the asteroid. This specific point is challenged by the lecturer. He mentions that the lower gravity will cause health problems among the people who take part in the colonization. In addition, he points out that the long-term colonists would suffer from losing muscle mass and bone density, in the same way that astronauts experienced during the journey of a few months.
Secondly, the author argues that the potential valuable minerals can make the asteroid colony extremely profitable. It is said that the profits, which is made from mining precious minerals and sending them back to Earth, will not only cover the costs of colonization. The lecturer, however, asserts that the exploit may not profitable as the costs of supporting a colony and of transporting the metals can be high. He goes on to say that price of the minerals may drop because there are too much resource on Earth and it is not rare anymore.
Finally, the author puts forth his idea that some of the asteroids are easy to reach, therefore, easy to colonize. He contends that many asteroids' orbits are close to Earth that the travel between earth and asteroids will be low-cost. In contrast, the lecturer's stance is that many orbits do not stay close to earth permanently. He notes that the travel between Earth and asteroids can be much farther when the paths move away from Earth. In that case, getting back will be a great challenge.
