Broken window theory
The reading and the lecture are both about the communities suffer from a high rate of crime. The author argues that crime is increasing due to no fixation of the broken window. However, the lecturer refutes the claim by mentioning that broken window theory is just a theory and it is not possible that minor crime begets major crime due to no fixation of the broken window. the lecturer cast doubt on the main point made in the reading by providing three reasons.
To begin with, The author stated that if a few windows in a building are broken and left unrepaired, overtime, criminals will likely commit further crimes. Howbeit, the argument is challenged by the author that the crime is dependent upon the social issue: a lot of teenagers are not occupied, so for living they might do the crime. Thus, the social issue might be the reason for the increase in the crime rate.
In addition, According to the reading police officer is not responding quickly. Nevertheless, the lecturer rebut this by mentioning that it is possible that police officers opt zero-tolerance theory in such a way that some people feel fears to go to the police station and give a report on crime
Finally, the author posits that the broken window is the reason for the conversion of minor crime into a major crime. Nonetheless, lecturer believes that a broken window does not result in vandalism. Moreover, it is wrong to associate the broken window with the crime.
