burning mirror

Essay topics:

burning mirror

Both the reading and the professor are discussing the Roman attack on Greek and possibility of using burning mirror in 2200 years ago. The reading claims that because of three reasons it seems impossible that Greek used burning mirror. On the other hand, the lecturer finds all the ideas implausible and presents some evidence to refute them all.

First, the passage holds the view that ancient Greeks were not technologically advanced enough to make such a device. Conversely, the lecturer rejects the point made in the reading and brings up the idea that the mirror was not made of from a single shield. Greeks used many small shields to produce the mirror and they were knowledgeable enough to make it in parabolic shape.

Another hypothesis on which the passage relies is that the burning mirror would have taken a long time to set the ship on fire. On the contrary, the professor takes the opposite viewpoint and underlines the fact that actually setting wood on fire takes 10 minutes, but the Greeks did not want to burn the wood initially. there was a seal material, pitch, which has been used between woods to make them water proof. It catch fire quickly in seconds. The Greeks burnt the pitch.

Finally, the last reason from the author's point of view is that the Greeks had no reason to build a weapon like a burning mirror while they could use flaming arrows. In contrast, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that the Romans were familiar with flaming arrows and were ready to put it out . They saw the mirror, but did not know what is going on. So, the burning mirror was much more surprising and much more effective.
