Changing reading habits of young people
The article discuss changing reading habits of the young peoples, especially in literature. More specifically, in regards to the passage, writer thinks that there is a sharp decline in the literature among other reading material. In the reading passage, the lecturer is quick to point out that there are some serious flaws in the writer’s claims. In fact, the speaker believes that this is not the case, and addresses, in detail, the trouble with each point made in the reading text.
First and foremost, the author in the reading states that decline in the reading habits toward literature is very unfortunate because it literature is very crucial for the intellectual stimulation and in turn, it make an individual more imaginative and increase the understanding of language. The lecturer, however disagrees and stand in firm opposition to this claim. In the listening, the professor states that there are other books apart from literature which are of higher quality, such as, science journals, history, and political science books. She goes on to say that these books also stimulate imagination and thus have equal impacts as any literature.
The passage also claim that literature is being replaced by self help and poorly written books. It further claim that public is prioritizing more of their time in music and movies, and it also causing the decline in cultural level. Of course, though, the speaker does not believe this is accurate. According to her, spending more time in music or movies does not represent lowered cultural level, rather the culture has itself changed. She further explains that music and movies speak more directly to the audience and thus they are more popular today.
Finally, the author wraps his argument by positing that todays there is a lack of support for the writers as their audience is lacking, in result, publisher investing less money into literature. Not surprisingly, the lecturer points out issue with this claim by contending that less support to modern literature is a result of their complex nature. She thinks that today’s literature is very tough to understand and even earlier people will find it tough to understand present times’ literature.
To sum up, both the writer and professor hold conflicting views about the changing habits of young people. It’s clear that they will have trouble finding common ground on this issue.
