Both the author and the lecturer discuss authenticity of the chevalier’s memoir. The passage claims that memoir is not accurate and correct. The professor, on the other hand, completely rejects whatever mentioned in the reading through citing three reasons.

First, both the author and the lecturer talk about the chevalier's wealth. According to the passage, the chevalier borrowed money from a Swiss merchant, so he would have not been wealthy. The lecturer, nevertheless, rejects author's view and illustrates the idea that spending money for party and gambling is indication of a great deal of capital but converting asset to cash took few days that time. Therefore, he was wealthy as he wrote in his memoir.

Secondly, both the reading and the professor discuss the chevalier and voltaire. The passage goes on to mention that the chevalier wrote details of his appointment with voltaire many years after, so he could not remember their conversations down to the smallest details. However, the professor refutes this, saying that he wrote down the daily events every night regularly but he mentioned his meeting with voltaire in his memoir many years after.

Eventually, both the passage and the lecture address the subject of the chevalier's escape from prison. The passage argues that he did not escape from the prison's ceiling, but he escaped from prison with assistance of his well-known friends who bribed jailers to free him. In contrast, the professor points out that many prisoner had powerful friends but they could not escape. In addition, jailers repaired ceiling after the chevalier's escape that shows his claim was reliable.

All in all, the author maintains that the chevalier's assertions are not authentic, while the professor not only cast doubt on, but she also demonstrates that he told the truth.
