comics
According to the Reading and the lecture they both are about “Comics medium”. The author of the reading states that “comics medium” is uniquely american art form. Nonetheles the author of the lecture disagree because he thinks that the “comic medium” belongs to the whole world.
The author of the reading said that Hogan Alley was the first successful comic strip. He states that the cartoon he created marked the beginning of comics and that was also written and drawn by american cartoonist. On the other hand, the lecturer thinks that people has realised that comics are not uniquely american, that Hogan Alley was not the first succesful comic strip and in fact, before him there had been many popular comic strips in Europe.
Secondly, the reading stated that the first comic book in the world and the first action comics, like spiderman, were both American-created. He also adds that americans have exported comics all over the world.
The lecturer challenged this point saying that 16 years before in Belgium was released a very popular action comic, and in addition to that, he also clarifies that neither Hogan or the creator of Spiderman were americans.
Finally, the author of the reading exposes that americans has influenced japanese after the wolrd war II, that some European comic series has been influenced by Disney comic books and that literature scholars thinks that comic strips are truly american because even comics that aren’t created by americans have an american influence.
From another point of view, the lecturer posits that traditional asian arts is the biggest influence of japanese comics, and that those “Disney influenced” comic series had actually a uniquely european style. So he concludes that Comic Medium is not uniquely american, it belongs to the whole world.
