The reading claims that one hundred million years ago, the dinosaurs survived harsh winter time in north Slop by migrating south and toward more habitable areas. However, the lecturer finds all the supporting facts in reading dubious, and presents some evidence to refute them all.
First, the author argues that these dinosaurs feed on plants. Since during winter time, when north Slop is in total darkness, there was no food for them, they must have migrated to find food. Conversely the lecturer argues that although north Slop is in darkness during winter, during summer and warmer time sun shone at least for 12 hours a day. This prepared suitable condition for dense vegetarian growth. So, in winter time there were a lot of dead plants that animal could feed from and there were no needs to migrate.
Furthermore, the reading holds the view that according to the finding, these dinosaurs lived in herds, and many modern day animals which live in herds, migrate too .On the contrary, the professor highlights the fact that living in herd does not equal with migration. There could be other reasons for living in herds, for example more protection against predators. Nowadays there are some animals which live in herds, like elks in North America forests, which do not migrate. They have chosen this way of living for protection.
Finally, the reading asserts that these dinosaurs were physically capable of migrating long distance towards warmer climate. In contrast, the speaker dismisses this issue due the fact that this is not the case for younger animals. She argues that adult dinosaurs were capable of moving in long distance, but young ones could not achieve this goal and would slow down the herd movement during migrations. Moreover herds could not leave them behind during migration. Hence, all the herds had to stay there.
