Did bees (a type of insect) exist on Earth as early as 200 million years ago? Such a theory is supported by the discovery of very old fossil structures that resemble bee nests. The structures have been found inside 200- million-year-old fossilized trees in the state of Arizona in the southwestern United States. However, many skeptics doubt that the structures were created by bees. The skeptics support their view with several arguments.
The lecture and the reading passage are concerned with whether or not the old fossil structures were created by bees. Firstly, the passage points out that there is no fossil of bees which can prove the existence of bees. however, the lecturer argues that this is related to lack of specific tree species which produce sticky material. that is the prerequisite of the fossil remains. Secondly, noting that flowering plants were absent in the period of the fossil structures, the lecturer explained that bees in previous times could not necessarily feed on flower. Instead, they could survive with the help of non-flowering plants, for example, pine. they adapt to new environment and rely on flowering plant later on. Lastly, the fossil structures manifest as not similar to nests of modern bees in detail, however, as explained in the lecture, a test proves that the fossil has the same chemical material as modern nests do. modern nests have water-proof chemicals, which are also found in the fossil structures.
