Dinosaurs
Animals which keep a constant body temperature are called endotherms. Dinosaurs were believed to be not endotherms, likewise the modern reptiles. The author of the reading passage opposes this widely spread belief. Nevertheless, the lecturer contradicts his points.
According to the author, the first reason to believe that dinosaurs were endotherms is unusual fossils excavated in Polar Regions. The author claims, that only animals which have a much higher temperature than the surrounding environment can remain alive in such a severe climate. Yet, the lecturer brings up the fact that millions of years ago, when the dinosaurs existed, the climate in this area was considerably moderate. Moreover, there is a possibility that the animals were simply migrating through it. Consequently, the fossils do not prove anything.
Another argument made by the author stands for leg position. Dinosaurs' legs were located underneath the body and not by its sides. He claims that this, in fact, is one of the endotherms' characteristics. However, the lecturer cast a doubt on this point of view. There is another, more convincing explanation of this position, which is legs were merely supporting the gigantic body weight.
Finally, the author talks about Haversian canals. Their existence is explained by rapid bone growth the year, which is also another typical feature of endothermy. The lecturer confirms this statement, albeit disapproves the meaning of it. She mentions the thickening of the bone structure called growth rings that show the periods during which a specimen grew. Dinosaurs tended to grow slower while being in a cold climate, which is distinctive for mammals that are not endotherms.
