Dinosaurs are endotherms or ectotherms
The topic of the reading and the lecture is about whether the dinosaur is endotherm or ectotherm. The author of the article presents three theories to prove that dinosaurs are endotherms. While the lecturer disputes the claims made in the article. Her position is that dinosaurs are reptiles, which are ectotherm.
According to the passage, dinosaurs’ fossils have been found in polar regions where is not suitable for reptiles to live. The article mentions that it is only warm-blooded animals can adapt to live in cold areas. The specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that the climate in the dinosaurs’ era is much warmer than now. Additionally, she also points out that, in the cold season, the dinosaur could also hibernate or migrate to the warmer areas.
Secondly, the author suggests that structure of dinosaurs’ body have a similarity with the endotherms. In the article, it is said that dinosaurs’ legs are underneath the body which is completely the same as the legs of all modern endotherms. The lecturer, however, asserts that structure of dinosaurs’ body could not prove that dinosaur is endotherm. The professor goes on to say that the legs under their bodies just support them to be able to grow to an enormous size.
Finally, the author shows that Haversian canals which is a structure allow the living animal to grow quickly, have been found in fossils of dinosaurs. The author contends that the appearance of the Haversian canals in the dinosaurs’ body is the strong evidence to determine that they are endotherms. In contrast, the lecturer’s stance is that there are also growth rings found in the dinosaurs’ fossils. The growth rings shows that the dinosaur did not always grow rapidly and it is not the characteristic of the endotherms.
