dinosaurs endotherms

Essay topics:

dinosaurs endotherms

The speaker talks about why most scientists do not think the dinosaurs are endotherms despite the evidence stated in the passage.

First, though the dinosaur fossils were found in the polar regions of the present, the regions need not necessarily be as cold as they are today. Polar regions were warm or were warm enough for major parts of the year so that the dinosaurs were able to live there without being endotherms. And when the cold weather arrived, they must have migrated to warmer places or went into hibernation. This contradicts what has been stated in the passage that only endotherms would have survived such cold climates.

Second, though the dinosaurs have legs separated from the main body, they are not high energy consuming mammals like endotherms. Having legs separated from the main body was advantageous to the dinosaurs as such position can support large weights and especially, the dinosaurs grew to become heavy weight. This rebuts the claims made in the passage that the position and movement of the legs of the dinosaurs indicate that dinosaurs were endotherms.

Finally, the dinosaurs had Haversian canals in their bones. But, they also had growth rings around their bones. The presence of growth rings indicate that the dinosaurs grew rapidly during warm weather and their growth slowed down during cold weather. On the contrary, the endotherms would grow equally and rapidly in all seasons and the growth rings are not a characteristic of endotherms. Therefore, the dinosaurs were not endotherms and this is in contrast to what has been stated in the passage that the dinosaurs were endotherms because of the presence of Haversian canals.
