Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It is better to have a broad knowledge of many academic subjects than to specialize in one specific subject. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Choosing an academic subject is always a challenging and confusing task as it may define our prospective career. Many students thinks that specializing in a specific subject is better and they cite having deep and, specialized knowledge is good for future for their argument. However, I disagree with this and strongly believe that having broad knowledge of many academic subjects is much better. I will explain my reasons in the following paragraphs.
Firstly, in today’s world, companies, universities or even individuals are money oriented. In order to save money everyone wants to reduce usage of human resources as much they can. My own example is well suited for this case. After completing my master, I was interviewing for various research projects. I got a acceptance call from a professor who congratulate me and told me that they preferred me over other candidates because I knew about water analysis as well as remote sensing. It made more sense for them to take a single student for both the task and the save money for better instruments and sampling trips. If I have not had the working experience in both the fields, I would have not gotten that job either. Because of this, I think that it is better to have a broad knowledge of many academic subjects.
Secondly, mostly in academia, almost everything is now interdisciplinary. A professor specializing in environmental sciences may work in circular economy and have more success in academic career. For example, one of my professor who was specialized in field monitoring of glaciers, was learning how to use remote sensing as many times weather make it very hard to visit glacier, thus hindering research progress. By doing so, he could monitor and study glacier in winters as well, when it is impossible to go there and conduct field work. So it is very important to have a broad knowledge of many academic subject because it prepare us for better career and pave ways for possible collaboration with other fields which is very important.
To conclude, it is a very complex topic to decide whether someone should have a broad knowledge or specialized in a subjects. However, I contend that it is better to have a broad knowledge of many academic subject for above reasons.
