Driverless cars

Essay topics:

Driverless cars

Reading and writing are about the driverless cars called self-driving cars. More specifically, in regard to passages, the author is of opinion that self-driving cars are beneficial to society, and supports his position by providing three arguments. The lecturer is quick to point out that there are some serious flaws with each point. He is of the opinion that there are many disadvantages of driverless cars, and addresses, in detail the trouble with each point in the reading text.

To begin with, the author mentions that driverless cars will help to reduce the car accidents which normally happens due to human errors. He further adds that one of the technology company has completed an experiment in which this car has driven 700,000 miles without causing an accident. Nevertheless, this idea is contradicted by the speaker by pointing out that software used in these cars is designed by humans, so their code is prone to errors. Furthermore, he adds that the same car which traveled 700,000 miles without an accident had just hit a car last month and has created doubt among people.

Secondly, the author claims that driverless cars are beneficial for environment due to efficiency with which they drive. Next, he explains that due to traffic problems, we have to start and stop engines manually repeatedly. However, these cars can communicate with other automatic cars and can reduce traffic and start or stop engine less frequently. Yet, the author challenges this claim by revealing that if automatic cars, more people will start driving cars with any age restrictions. He elaborates it further by saying that this will result in increase of number of cars on roads, which will further add to existing traffic.

Finally, the author wraps up his argument by positing that these cars will give some time back to humans. Moreover, in the article, it is said that this time can be used on other activities like watching videos instead of focusing on roads. Not surprising, in contrast to author point, the lecturer contends that most people find driving cars as a welcome distraction from their daily routines as they use to hear music while driving. Additionally, he states that extra time given back by these cars which not be spent on any extra activities as people already watch videos during their normal routines.

To sum up, the author and the speaker have conflicting views regarding the driverless cars. It is clear that they will have trouble finding common ground on this.
