The reading and lecture both discuss about whether wood companies in the United States will devote extra efforts to receive eco certification. While the article states that this possibility is unlikely for several reasons, the lecturer refutes this, stating that the factors mentioned in the passage do not prevent the wood companies from conducting ecologically friendly procedures in order to earn the certification.
First of all, the article argues that customers will probably disregard such certification. It is mentioned that a large amount of brands advertise their’s products as of outstanding quality, so shoppers are likely to distrust them. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that customers do pay attention the products that are recognized by well-known agencies. Furthermore, she argues that consumers react more favorably towards companies examined by trustworthy organizations.
Secondly, the author argues that expenses for having wood examined are high, so ecocertified products will be more expensive. Since American consumers care a lot about price, this increase in the cost of wood will cause them to choose uncertified but cheaper products. The lecturer rebuts this argument by claiming that small increase in the products’ price, which is below 5% for certified wood , will not affect customers’ decision. She also suggests that the consumers will take into account other factors to form their opinions of the product instead of the price when it comes to such slight changes in the
cost of products.
Finally, the author points out that the eco certification is only beneficial to companies that sell products internationally. Therefore, the practice is not suitable in the United States since American companies only market their products domestically, and also, a large part of American consumers are happy with this standard. However, the lecturer posits that wood companies in the United States should be more aware of foreign competition. He states that foreign firms can invade into the country’s industry and many consumers who care about the environment will turn towards to these companies for ecocertified wood.
