The reading and the listening talks about how US wood companies can galvanize ecological sustainability practices by following the policies required to achieve ecocertification, which is a certificate obtained if any company follows the ecological responsible steps and practices. The author of the reading believes that there are three possible explanations to why there is less chance that US companies will want to get the certificate. However, the lecturer challenges the statements made by the author. He is of the opinion that US companies are not bothered that much by the reasons explained in the passage.
First of all, the author of the passage states that Americans are used to watching too much advertisements, which might cause them to overlook the fact about ecocertification. It is mentioned that it is highly unlikely for the Americans to even believe about the certificate as every product are being advertisement with labels like 'new' and 'improved' . This argument is challenged by the lecturer. He says that the Americans do not treat all the advertisements in the same way. They distinguish the commercials made by the companies of the product and the independent certification agency. Furthermore, they show more confidence in the commercials made by the independent certificate agency, which is salutary for the ecocertifies products.
Secondly the writer contends that, the ecocertifies wood in the US are costly as the companies have to pay a certain amount to the certification agency for the certificate. The article also notes that part of this amount paid to the agency by the company is taken from the consumers, when they are being charged. The lecturer however rebuts this by asserting that every company has a difference in the price they charge and this is not a factor the Americans take much in consideration. He elaborates on this by mentioning that when the change of price from company to company is very small, like less that 5%, consumers tend to overlook this factor of high price.
Finally it is stated in the article that the local wood business might not flourish outside of US. The author establishes that the certificate that is being pursued by the companies will still have value if the products are sold locally and not internationally. The lecturer on the other hand posits that the companies should acknowledge the international market. He puts forth the idea about the foreign competition and explains that if the companies are only concerned about the local market, then the foreign companies will start to enter and take over the local ones.
