The reading and the lecture are both about the Triassic period, and what kind of theories there are to prove the extinction of many species. The author of the reading believes that the main reasons were because of sea levels, massive climate cooling, and asteroids. The lecturer casts doubts made on the claims in the articles. She believes that none of these facts are true.
First of all, the author points out that the seafloor levels could have been the main reason of extinctions. It is mentioned that the seafloor level fell, and left the animals in the coasts, and shallow areas to die. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that the animals along the coast, and shallow regions are able to adapt quickly. Furthermore, she argues that the sea level readings found, were gradient for about a million years, thus telling us that the animals had a long time to adapt to the changes.
Secondly, the author contends that the climate cooling were another theory on the extinctions. The article notes that the volcanic activities during the Triassic period were great. The lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests that the sulfuric acids would usually disappear in a short period. She elaborates on this by mentioning that the sulfuric acid would mix with moisture, creating rain.
Finally, the author states that asteroids were another major theory on the destruction of some species. The article establishes that the asteroid would have locked the sun and prevented the plants from growing. The lecturer on the other hand posits that if there was an asteroid strike, it would have created a crater. However, the only crater found close to this time period was at least 12 million years before any of this happened.
