At the end of the Triassic period 200 million years ago, there was a mass-extinction event that caused the extinction of more than half of all living species. It was this extinction event that allowed dinosaurs to become the dominant species for the next

The reading and the lecture are both about possible reasons for mass extinction at the end of the Triassic period. The reading provides three explanations. However, the lecture casts doubt on the claims and refutes each of the author's explanations.

First, the reading states that fluctuation of the sea levels near the end of the Triassic period can destroy the habitat in coastal and the shallow areas. This point is challenged in the lecture by saying that the animals in those areas are capable to adopt environmental changes. Animals can gradually adjust themselves to new conditions. So, it should be something else that happens more sudden.

Second, the reading claims that sulfur dioxide released by volcanic activity can cause a lowering temperature, then a climate cooling. The lecture states that it is true that sulfur dioxide released by volcanic activity but it stays only for a short amount of time in the atmosphere. Sulfur dioxide combines with water and returns back as rain. Therefore, it cannot be the reason for global cooling that causes massive extinction.

Third, the reading suggests that the asteroid strike can be a good explanation for extinction. The lecture opposes that idea by saying that crater found on the earth is dated 12 million years before the extinction. It is a long time ago to be a reason for extinction.
