In these set of materials, the reading states that saving endangered species in unnatural. and possess many drawbacks. However, the professor opposes the reading. He states that saving endangered species should be done whenever possible. And the arguments in the article can easily be dismissed.
First, the reading claims that, the loss of some species won’t necessarily cause an ecological disaster. And it gave an example of Dinosaur extinction. Which didn’t cause a harm to the ecosystem. But the professor didn’t agree with this point. He says that the article failed to mention that dinosaur had dominated the earth. And its extinction shifted the ecosystem. similarly, the loss of any species could alter the ecosystem in a way which can threat our existence.
Second, the reading claims that with the advent of genetic engineering. Nature became unnecessary in inspiration of medication. But the professor refutes this idea, by saying that plants are inspiring the creation of about 40% of drugs. Yet only few percentage of plants were studied. And we lose 100 species \ day. Therefore, by extinction scientists lose many opportunities for discovery every day.
Third, the article asserts that a huge cost for saving species from extinction is often not justified. Conversely, the professor disagrees with this point. He states that saving endangered species brings many economic advantages. He gave an example of the fresh water mussel. Which its species have mostly extinct. And the only 40% remaining are driving profitable industry. So, according to the professor, endangered species deserve saving if only for its financial benefits.
