Essay topics: TPO-47 - Integrated Writing Task
The audio and the reading passage are devoted to the issue whether pterosaurs which were winged reptiles - were capable of powered flight. Although the passage gives us some evidence which buttresses the idea that those animals couldn't fly, the lecturer casts doubts on the evidence and provides us with new one. Both resources will be discussed in details below.
Firstly, the author claims that because today's reptiles are cold blooded, the extinct pterosaurs ought to be cold blooded as well. In this case, they were not able to generate enough energy to power the discussed type of flight. However, the speaker avers that a recent discovery of ancient fossils has revealed that the animal was covered with a dense, hair-like coverage which reminds fur of contemporary warm-blooded animals which employ this kind of coverage for maintaining internal temperature when the external one declines. Thus, there is a possibility that pterosaurs might have faster metabolism and therefore were capable of powered flight.
Secondly, the text suggests that the ancient animal was large and heavy. The lecturer disagrees with it due to the fact that bones of the creature had special features which significantly reduced its weight. For instance, pterosaur's bones were hollow inside and thus it did not weigh much.
Finally, the writer believes that the winged reptiles were not able to launch themselves because their legs did not have enough muscle power; at the same time, although the speaker agrees with the fact that the legs of the pterosaurs were not strong enough to launch the animal; the lecturer states that a pterosaur walked on four limps and thus it should use all four limps to launch itself. For instance, some modern animals, which are capable of powered flight, do walk on four limps and use all four limes for being airborne. Thus there is a reason to assume that the ancient reptiles could take off from the ground if they used all four limps.
